The Official Mixer's Manual
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (October, 1983)
Authors: Patrick Gavin Duffy and Robert Jay Misch
Average review score:

A manual no bar enthusiast should be without
Opening with an impassioned plea to maintain the dignity his trade, Patrick Gavin Duffy presents a representative collection of drinks from his era (1940's-50's). He includes drinks from the prohibition, warning those who would attempt to mix them. The drinks are organized by base liquor, which helps the mixer find a beverage without knowing its name. Because this book is older, some of the recipes call for ingredients no longer available or difficult to find. Also included is a wine guide, though the information may be out of date. Though it was written 50 years ago, Duffy's call to elevate the craft of bartending remains relevant today.

One-Footer
Published in Paperback by Les Livres (December, 1992)
Author: Jay Klemon
Average review score:

What to Clone Next --- and Consequences
One-Footer is a book ahead of its time. It is a comprehensive coverage of issues of genetic engineering --- and specifically how and why to change the human to improve. I have to warn you the part of human body the book uses as example lies in the forbidden zone (the title may give you a hint), but it makes the assessment of problems and values real and to the point. The book is written as fiction, but is founded on facts. Easy to read, yet fully exposes the challenge the human faces in applying new knowledge to one's life. To prepare for a future built on genetic knowledge, this is a must read book.

Opening the Doors to Hollywood: How to Sell Your Idea Story, Book, Screenplay, Manuscript
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (December, 1997)
Authors: Carlos De Abreu, Howard Jay Smith, and Carlos De Abreu
Average review score:

Like Having a Friend in the Business.
The authors give a 'nuts and bolts' overview of the entertainment business, and generally what a novice can expect once they have taken that first step into the glittering city called Hollywood. The sage advice given is ample to give a newcomer enough information to lead to the proper Hollywood doors, rather than down blind alleys. The authors give great advice, the dreamer has to do the work. I would highly recommend.

Our Moonlight Revels: A Midsummer Night's Dream in the Theatre (Studies in Theatre History and Culture)
Published in Hardcover by University of Iowa Press (December, 1997)
Author: Gary Jay Williams
Average review score:

Excellent for Dramaturgs
Recently, I was the dramaturg for A Midsummer Night's Dream. One of the primary jobs of the dramaturg is to research the production history of the play, and as my teacher once told me, "There's no point in re-inventing the wheel." This being said, Our Moonlight Revels is a great place to start.

Beginning with the original production and moving to the present, Williams explores several productions of this classical play. He hits all the major productions, such as Peter Brook's 1970 production, Beerholm Tree's 1900 production, and productions by Kean, Vestris, and Reinhardt. The book is divided by theory rather than chronologically. There are chapters devoted to the Wedding-play myth, Modernism and Post-Modernism, Scenic images of the "Empire." Of course no book, can be able to explore every single production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in the last four hundred years, but Williams' book gives one landmark productions that can be used for further research. One book can't tell you everything, you have to do some research on your own, but Williams at least can point you in the right direction.

The book contains several production photos both in color and in black and white.

Out of the Labyrinth: For Those Who Want to Believe but Can't
Published in Paperback by Crystal Clarity Pub (January, 2002)
Authors: J. Donald Crises in Modern Thought Walters and Jay J. Casbon
Average review score:

A lot more fun than Fritjoff Capra...
Walters does a better job explaining New Science in the context of Eastern wisdom than such respected luminaries as Fritjoff Capra, Ken Wilber, and Deepak Chopra. For one thing, his writing is accessible to a far wider audience. A good thing, too, because what he's done is nothing less than demolish the West's leading killjoys: the twentieth-century thinkers who claimed that life is meaningless because science has shown us that the universe simply doesn't make sense: evolution is random (Darwin), light behaves like both a particle and a wave (Einstein), and we are creatures of mud who struggle to rise above our roots (Freud).

The ringleader of modern western nihilism was Jean Paul Sartre. While fully accepting the findings of science on which the nihilists based their claims, Walters arrives at radically different conclusions. When he's done, Sartre stands revealed as the last in a line of rationalist con-artists, and life is shown to be not bereft of, but bursting with meaning.

Walters wakes me up and inspires me to shout with pleasure. Finally, here's a synthesis of western and Eastern wisdom that is a joy to read as well as intuitively and rationally persuasive.

Thank you, JDW!!
